Collegeboxes knows a thing or two about different universities. As the number one student storage and shipping provider, Collegeboxes wants to spotlight one of the 350-plus schools we serve each month.
Miami University (OH) is our School of the Month for the month of July.
Where is Miami University?
Miami University, also known as Miami of Ohio, is in Oxford, Ohio. Easily mistaken for the University of Miami in Florida, Miami of Ohio won’t have the beaches found in Coral Gables. Oxford is home to over 20,000 people. It is surrounded by family farms and offers an award-winning farmers market year-round. In 2014, Forbes rated it as “the best college town in the United States.”
Miami University is easily accessible from a few major cities. Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio are about an hour drive away. Indianapolis and Louisville, Ky. can both be reached within three hours. It’s a fun place to seek adventure all around western Ohio.
What is Miami University known for?
Author Richard Moll wrote the book, “The Public Ivy’s: A Guide to America’s Best Public Undergraduate Colleges and Universities” back in 1985. His goal was to find public schools that demonstrated high academic rigor, had resources to spend on exceptional faculty and facilities, and compete for the best and brightest students similar to Ivy League schools but without the high price tag. Moll deemed Miami University and seven other schools worthy of the title.
Miami University continues to build off and hold true to those values. It’s known as the “Yale of the West” for the liberal arts curriculum. Graduates from Miami University have influenced organizations across the country. Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd president of the United States, was a Redhawk himself. Paul Brown, who is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, not only coached the Cleveland Browns but also brought Ohio its second professional football team, the Cincinnati Bengals.
People like Harrison and Brown set a foundation of the high standards at Miami University. In 2022, U.S. News & World Report ranked Miami University a Top 50 Public University, Top 20 Undergraduate Engineering Program, Top 50 Undergraduate Business Program, Top 100 Best Values, and Top 10 Commitment to Undergraduate Teaching.
The school is one of the oldest public universities in the country and has a rich history of traditions.
If you didn’t follow any of our study tips, walk by the Tri-Delt Sundial on campus. There’s a legend told that rubbing the head of one of the copper turtles before an exam will help you get an “A.” Magic has happened at the Upham Arch too. The saying goes, “If you kiss your true love under the Upham Hall Arch, you will marry, and the bond will never be broken.” In 2009, Miami University broke the Guinness World Record for the most people renewing their wedding vows at once under the Upham Arch. Over 1,000 couples participated in the event.
